Just last month, the BFF turned 22 & I had every intention of surprising her.
She’s obsessed with quirky (or in her own words – “the more stupid the better!!”) characters like the three-eyed alien from toy’s story, the annoying minions from despicable me (specifically Dave & Jorge) & Elmo (to his credit, Elmo isn’t dumb lah ok). Well since Minions are still pretty much the “in” thing now – cupcakes, cakes, cake pops… you name it – you can google hundreds of pictures online – I decided to make her a standing-up minion with cake.
It was a huge challenge – prior to this, I’ve rarely done carved cakes because the margin for error is pretty small plus they take up double the time compared to regular cakes. But well, its the BFF’s cake + a chance to play with something new, hah. Challenge Accepted!
I took 12.5hrs to finish the cake and barely made it in time to catch her leaving the office – luckily I had some help from one of her colleagues in stalling her!
If you’re curious.. Dave’s made out of an internal structure of four short dowels, screwed to the cake drum + a cake board plus another three dowels to hold all that cake up. His interior’s made of some damn good dark chocolate cake, layered with “awesome” (in her words), salted caramel buttercream and slathered with 55% chocolate ganache + fondant. His adorable shoes were Rice Krispie Treats covered with fondant – technically inedible due to skewers inside. Arms too.

Its been a long, fifteen years — from primary school all the way to 5N through poly and now Uni & I’m always thankful to have a shoulder to bitch on and some one to pig out with. heh. Happy 22nd Birthday once again while I think of how to top your 23rd next year. xx ❤
